- Laptops - Interactive (http://www.cnrs.fr/cw/dossiers/dosdarwinE/darwin.html) - Exit slip Instruction: Opening – To begin this unit on evolution it is important to begin with its founder Charles Darwin. To begin I will ask the students what they know about evolution and list these ideas on the board, simply to get an idea of where these students are in their education. I will go over the powerpoint that I create, within the powerpoint I will show a quick video that shows Darwin performing a musical number that while entertaining contains a lot of factual information. This will peak the students interest and get them involved in what they are learning through humor.
Activities – The main activity of this lesson will be the completion of the interactive “Darwin: A Naturalists Journey Around The World” the interactive covers each part of Darwin’s five year journey around the world including pictures, and readings on each leg of the journey. The students will follow the journey but pay special attention to the first and tenth stops on his journey and take notes on those. These two area cover Darwin before the journey and when he is on the Galapagos Islands two of the most important aspects of his journey. The students will record their notes in their notebooks
Closing – to finish the lesson the students will report out loud an interesting fact that they learned about Darwin on their journeys. And will be free to ask questions to clarify any aspects they do not understand. To finish the class I will hand out an exit slip that the students will need to finish before they leave. The questions will include: -Where did Darwin’s journey begin? When? -What was the name of the Ship they sailed upon? -What was Darwin’s job on this journey? -What type of bird was most intriguing to Darwin? Why?
Assessment Notes The students will be assessed on their ability to stay on task. And will also be given a homework grade for the exit slip.
